Description
The DeLorme Earthmate PN-40 has the power you need to enjoy your time outdoors. It has a Hi-performance dual-core processor giving you lightning fast map redraws even when panning, zooming or when using aerial data or USGS quad maps. The PN-40 uses Fast USB 2.0 to transfer to either the generous 1 gigabyte of internal memory or a SD card in the device. The super high-sensitivity 32 channel Cartesio GPS chipsed from STMicrolectronics combined with a proprietary Kalman filter work together to give you fast signal acquisition, enhanced accuracy and ConstatLock satellite retention even in difficult conditions like tree cover, or streets in between buildings in the urban jungle. It has a 5-6 second hot start and WAAS for accuracy of < 3 meters 95% of the time (subject to accuracy degradation under US DOD Selective Availability Program). After all, who wants to wait around for your GPS unit to scroll a map or lock onto the satellites? What good is all the power in the world if you can’t see, the screen, so the folks at DeLorme have added a high-resolution, 2.2″ TFT color display viewable in any light, even direct sun.
Fast, accurate hardware and a state of the art display deserve great maps, and here again, the Earthmate PN-40 delivers. It includes an onboard base map with major highways and thoroughfares worldwide, and now also has secondary and connector roads for the US. It can be overlaid with all the wide aray of map types; all at user-controlled zoom levels. This lets you choose which image or map type to see of your current GPS location.
With their roots in map making, Delorme offers unprecedented mapping options in the PN-40. It comes with Topo USA software (Windows XP and Vista), with vector-base maps created from the USGS topographic data and the latest Delorme US street and trail network. Delorme is the only company we know of that offers you a full set of US maps included at no additional cost with their Earthmate GPS units. The maps even include contour lines with elevation numbers and land details like bodies of water, wetlands, forest, mountains, glaciers, grasslands, rock cover and more. You can cut and transfer custom maps with the exact coverage you want. These maps are fully routable when combined with corresponding regional highway maps giving you address level street routing for GPS auto navigation as well as trail routing for your next off road adventure. The two way transfers between the PN-40 GPS unit and Topo USA let you exchange track, and road or trail routes. Also included is a free trial of DeLomes Map Library Downloads. (a 1 year unlimited subscription is available below). This incredible library includes:
- USGS 7.5 Minute Quad Maps -– authentic scanned USGS paper quad maps show roads, trails, buildings, large natural landmarks and other unique features.
- NOAA Nautical Charts –- the complete set includes the Great Lakes, Alaska, and Hawaii and show numerous navigation aids, water depths, water body names, hazards, and more.
- Color Aerial Imagery -– is available for many US States and select US Cities. It provides a unique aerial perspective showing roads, trails, buildings, large natural landmarks and other unique features making it great for off the beaten path adventures.
- Sat-10 10 meter colorized satellite imagery – – is useful for viewing large geographic areas and provides high level views of vegetation, topography and large geologic formations on Earth’s surface.
- B&W DOQQ (Digital Orthoquads) Aerial Imagery – provides a unique aerial perspective of off the beaten path environments.
With the abundant variety of mapping data available for the PN-40 your would expect lots of storage options and you will not be disappointed. In addition to the 1 GB internal flash memory the PN-40 supports SDHC high-capacity SD-cards for up to 32 GB of storage. DeLorme even includes a 1 GB SD (Secure Digital) Card so you are ready to hit the trail right out of the box. The Earthmate PN-40 holds up to 10 tracks (10,000 points per track), 1,000 user-defined waypoints, and 50 routes.
One of the first things I look for in an electronic gadget is the power options and the EarthMate PN-40s got’em. I personally prefer rechargeable Li-Ion batteries, but have friends that like the versatility of standard AA batteries. With the PN-40 you can have the best of both worlds because it can use AAs out of the box, and has an option power kit available below.
The PN-40 is equipped with a three axis compass that provides direction while stationery. When you move the GPS heading takes over. The compass includes an accelerometer to measuser the amount of static acceleration due to gravity, so the PN-40 can analyze the way the device is moving and make adjustments. This allows the compass to get an accurate reading regardless of how you are holding the PN-40 in your hand – tilted up, face down; it works any which way.
The PN-40 comes equipped with a barometric altimeter for providing accurate altitude readings. The barometric altimeter works in conjunction with the GPS to measure elevation when using auto calibration or alone when auto calibration is disabled. GPS by itself can only factor an approximate altitude reading, but in conjunction with the altimeter the PN-40 can provide accurate elevation data.
The Earthmate PN-40 also comes with sun, moon, and tide charts, as well as suggestions of good times for fishing and hunting.
The PN-40 is built for the rugged conditions of outdoor adventures. It has been tested for operation in high vibration situations like off road driving or mountain biking, and in humidity levels over 90%. With an operating temperature range from -4F to 167F the PN-40 has you covered in extreme heat or cold.
IPX-7 (1m submergence for 30 min.) waterproof protects the PN-40 from rain showers or an accidental dunking. Its durable rubberized body make it the ideal companion for your next trip.
