Description
Hand forged in the USA.
Thoughtfully designed with the bushcrafter in mind. Notice even the beard sides are rounded making for an especially comfortable and safe hatchet while choking up on those close jobs. The addition of the hammer poll makes for good balance as well as adding utility. The head is a tad lighter compared to handle length of many axes on the market making for a very nimble and controllable axe. Yet the longer handle gives you the ability to add power to your swing in those emergency situations, even handle small felling jobs. The blade has a fairly wide profile making it very durable and resistant to chipping, while the longer bevel grind gives amazing bite, feeling like a much smaller hatchet. We are proud to offer this fine axe, and even more proud that it is hand forged right here in the USA!
Weight: 1.60 lb. Axe Head
Length: 22 to 24” Handle
Seven Pines Forge, owned by Ted Ferringer, is nestled in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains in Pennsylvania. Each piece that is made reveals the subtle individuality of the craft, for those who appreciate the simplicity of Colonial design and the tradition of Early American wrought iron. The amount of skill, labor and time required for this craft is not easy but Ted Ferringer is committed to preserve the standard and quality of his trade.
Seven Pines Forge axes and hatchets are hand-forged and heat-treated out of 4140 or O1 Tool Steel.
4140 cold finished annealed is a chromium-molybdenun alloy steel that can be oil hardened to relatively high hardenability. The chromium content provides good hardness penetration & the molybdenum imparts uniformity of hardness and high strength.
O1 Tool Steel is the original oil-hardening, “non-shrinking” tool steel that can be hardened to the Rockwell C 65 range from a low austenitizing temperature. O1 is a general-purpose tool steel that is typically used in applications where alloy steels cannot provide sufficient hardness, strength, and wear resistance
