Hand forged in the USA.
This style of axe is a Northern European axe dating back to the 12th century. Axes with eye- sockets made their breakthrough in the early Middle Ages in Europe. The key feature of this axe is the long sturdy eye socket and the wide cutting edge. The Bearded Axe with an eye socket was from the two lugged axe style. This style of axe was used mainly for hewing timber and splitting logs as well as carving. It was used by carpenters in the Middle Ages and is equally loved today

Seven Pines Forge, owned by Ted Ferringer, is nestled in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains in Pennsylvania. Each piece that is made reveals the subtle individuality of the craft, for those who appreciate the simplicity of Colonial design and the tradition of Early American wrought iron. The amount of skill, labor and time required for this craft is not easy but Ted Ferringer is committed to preserve the standard and quality of his trade.
Seven Pines Forge axes and hatchets are hand-forged and heat-treated out of 4140 or O1 Tool Steel.
4140 cold finished annealed is a chromium-molybdenun alloy steel that can be oil hardened to relatively high hardenability. The chromium content provides good hardness penetration & the molybdenum imparts uniformity of hardness and high strength.
O1 Tool Steel is the original oil-hardening, “non-shrinking” tool steel that can be hardened to the Rockwell C 65 range from a low austenitizing temperature. O1 is a general-purpose tool steel that is typically used in applications where alloy steels cannot provide sufficient hardness, strength, and wear resistance
