Description
Kaito KA1103 Radio
The KA1103 is an amazing little radio. It is widely regarded as having reception and clarity equal to radios 2 to 3 times its cost. The 1103 has PLL (phase-locked loop), SSB (single sideband) and dual conversion all in a radio costing less than $80.00.
- PLL separates the frequency you are listening to from background noise increasing clarity, pulling in weaker signals and following station drift.
- Dual Conversion, usually only found on more expensive radios, helps eliminate “image” interference which gives you better station selectivity on SW and AM bands.
- SSB lets you listen to LSB (lower sideband) and USB (upper sideband) transmissions. These are usually voice only (no music) broadcast such as HAM aeronautical, military, and maritime communications. The Amateur radio bands can be found just below 4 MHz, just above 7 MHz and in the middle of 14 MHz – 80, 40 and 20 meters, respectively. The Meter band to frequency conversion indictor helps you find the HAM bands you are looking for. The 1103 has a BFO (beat frequency oscillator) fine tuning knob for SSB listening.
The KA1103 lets you easily choose the station you are looking for with direct frequency entry on the key pad, jog tuning dial (great for quickly surfing though the channels), or via auto scan and memory scan. The 1103 has a signal strength meter to assist you in tuning in stations. The 1103 has a 64 level digital volume display with direct entry or jog dial volume control. FM frequency starts at 76.00 MHz with 25Khz step adjustment allowing you to listen to campus, and full power FM stations. The 1103 has continuous AM coverage from 100-29,999KHz with 1KHz step adjustment. This includes SW/MW/LW/SSB bands.
If you have trouble remembering your favorite stations the 1103 can help – it has 268 memory presets with the mode (FM, AM, or SSB) stored with the frequency. The large digital display lets you watch a virtual needle scroll across the screen, as well as seeing the exact frequency at a glance. The 1103’s backlight, lights up, not only the display, but all the buttons too, making it truly usable in dark conditions. The 1103 is like having the best of both the digital and analog worlds with its duel display and multiple tuning methods.
The 1103 comes with an AC adaptor which can power the radio or recharge the 4 NIMH batteries included. It can even run on 4 standard AA alkaline batteries in a pinch, and has a battery level indicator. It has Local/DX and wide/narrow switches, as well as, a music/news (voice) selector and FM stereo/mono settings. The narrow setting reduces interference from adjacent frequencies, while wide gives you the best quality on stations where interference is not a problem.
The 1103 has a 24 hour clock, two alarms and an adjustable (1 to 99 minutes) sleep timer. The KA-1103 has external D/C power and antenna inputs, and head phone and line outputs.
It comes as a kit with an A/C adaptor, 4 AA rechargeable batteries, external antenna, and soft carry bag all for one low cost! With all the Kaito KA1103 has to offer, what are you waiting for, get yours today. It measures 6.1 in X 4.1 in X 1.1 in (165 X 105 X 28.50 mm)
